When vehicle owners come to us with a cracked or chipped windshields, their biggest concern is usually whether or not their car should windshield repair rather than windshield replacement. One of the most common windshield repair related questions we get asked is, “How is it possible to ‘glue’ broken glass back together in a permanent way?”
The answer to that is because of the process in which the windshield’s laminated glass is made. Two pieces of glass are bonded over an inner layer of Poly Vinyl Butyral (PVB). The bonded layers of glass and PVB make the glass able to withstand impact from foreign objects, preventing them from entering the passenger compartment. As an additional safety feature, it prevents objects and people from flying out of the car in the event of an accident.
Because of the two layers of glass the majority of minor chops and cracks only end up damaging the first layer, leaving the second unharmed. The way the windshield repair works is we remove the air from the crack with a special machine and replace it with resin. The windshield repair process is so efficient that most insurance companies will pay for it to avoid the more costly windshield replacement service.
However windshield repair is not recommended if the break penetrates the inner layer of glass, if the plastic inner layer is discolored, or if the damage is in the driver’s primary viewing area. There are also occasional cracks and chips that cannot be repaired because of their size or depth. Our experienced auto technicians will be able to inspect the damages done to your windshield and make the best choice for your car.
Your vehicle’s structural integrity depends not only on its frame, but on the strength of the windshield as well. Therefore it’s very important to address glass problems as soon as possible.
