Now that late autumn and winter are approaching, it’s time to consider making several preparations to your car so that you’ll be ready for any changing weather and road conditions in the future.
Tire Pressure
First of all, be sure to check the tire pressure of all four tires on your car. As the cooler weather of late fall approaches, the drop in temperatures will lower the tire pressure inside your tires. If you have an older car, you’ll just need to keep an eye on your tires and fill them up with a bit of air if they start to look a little low.
If you have a newer vehicle, it will probably have a tire pressure monitoring system that is sensitive to within a degree or two of the correct tire pressure recommended for your tires. When your tire pressure is low, your tire pressure monitoring system will recognize this and notify your car’s computer, which in turn will cause the tire pressure warning symbol to light up on your dashboard. To get the light to turn off, simply add some air to your tires to raise the tire pressure within the acceptable range.
Winter Tires
If you live in an area that gets a lot of inclement weather, you may want to change what type of tires you have on your vehicle to match the driving conditions you will encounter this winter. You can talk to your mechanic or tire specialist about whether you should have “all season,” “all weather,” or “winter” tires on your car. If you decide to use winter tires, be sure to change all four tires since it is unsafe to use just two winter tires.
Other Safety Tips
In addition to preparing your tires for any changing road conditions, you’ll also want to make sure the rest of your car is all set for the upcoming winter weather. Here are a few simple things you can do to get your car ready for winter:
- Keep an emergency winter survival kit in your car so you’re prepared for the unexpected.
- Equip your car with a snow brush and ice scraper to clear ice and snow from the windshield.
- Make sure your windshield wipers are in prime condition and your washer fluid is filled up.
- Fix any chips or nicks in your windshield before winter weather conditions make these small problems worse.
